Galvanized, painted or stainless

Once a hole opens, water runs straight into the chase every time it rains, soaking the framing and the insulation around the pipe, and reaching the fireplace below.

Those spots get a close look on every inspection. A cover with surface rust can sometimes be cleaned and coated; one with pitting or holes needs replacing, and a sloped stainless cover stops the cycle.

Fasteners that don't rust first

A new cover is only as good as what holds it on. Ordinary steel screws rust before the cover does and leave streaks down the siding; screws driven into soft wood pull out in the wind.
