Direct vent and B-vent are different systems

Direct-vent units keep their combustion sealed off from the house. Their co-axial pipe brings outside air in through the outer ring and sends exhaust out through the inner one, and the pipe is part of the unit's listing. A B-vent fireplace draws room air and relies on natural draft through double-wall Type B vent, listed to UL 441, which works only for appliances made for it.

NFPA 54 and the fuel gas volume of the Florida Building Code cover venting, and the fireplace maker's vent tables add the limits for your model: pipe brand, lengths, elbows and where the termination may sit.

Terminations and clearances

A termination too close to a window, door or air intake can let exhaust back into the house. The fuel gas code sets minimum distances for wall terminations, and a unit's manual can add its own, so our pros measure against both before signing off a location.

If a carbon monoxide alarm goes off, leave the house with everyone and make the 911 call once you're outside.

Why vent faults show up as shutdowns

Gas fireplaces are built to protect the room when venting goes wrong.
