The turned-down edge and drip

A chase cover doesn't just lie on top of the chase. Its edges turn down over the sides of the framing, and the bottom of that turndown kicks out to form a drip.

The turndown keeps wind-driven rain from blowing in under the edge, and the drip throws water clear of the siding below so it doesn't run down the chase walls.
