Base flashing sits on the roof and turns up against the brick. Counter flashing comes down from the brick and laps over the turned-up edge, so water running down the chimney face lands on the outside of the base piece instead of behind it.

In the Brick Industry Association's chimney flashing detail, the counter flashing laps the base by at least 3 inches, with joints and laps sealed. Our specialists check that overlap on every side. The upslope side takes the most water
