The apron across the front

On the downslope face of the chimney, a single apron piece runs across the base, lying over the shingles below and turning up against the brick. Water runs off the chimney face onto it and away down the roof.

It fails at the top edge, where it meets the brick, and at the corners, where it has to wrap around to meet the side pieces.
