How far the base flashing should reach

To do its job, base flashing has to reach far enough both ways. The Brick Industry Association's detail has it extend at least 4 inches onto the roof and at least 4 inches up the chimney face, with tabs folded around the corners.

Pieces cut short to save metal, or trimmed back during an old roof job, leave too little overlap. Water creeps sideways under the roofing or over the top edge. Our pros measure what's there during the inspection and replace short pieces with ones cut to the full size, so the repair doesn't depend on sealant alone. Full-size pieces also leave room for the roofing to cover the fasteners.

Setting counter flashing into a mortar joint

The strongest attachment for counter flashing on brick is a reglet, a narrow groove sawn into a mortar joint, with the flashing's upper lip folded into it and sealed. Water running down the brick then crosses over the flashing's top edge instead of running behind it.
