Step flashing along the sides

Along the sides of the chimney, flashing goes in as a series of short L-shaped pieces, one for each course of shingles. Every piece overlaps the piece beneath it and hides under the next shingle, and water steps down the roof from one to the next.

Sidewall flashing on shingle roofs can follow this step method or use continuous L flashing, and the Florida Building Code allows both. Step pieces fail when one is missing, too short or nailed where the shingle doesn't cover it. How far the base flashing should reach

To do its job, base flashing has to reach far enough both ways. The Brick Industry Association's detail has it extend at least 4 inches onto the roof and at least 4 inches up the chimney face, with tabs folded around the corners.

Pieces cut short to save metal, or trimmed back during an old roof job, leave too little overlap. Water creeps sideways under the roofing or over the top edge. Our pros measure what's there during the inspection and replace short pieces with ones cut to the full size, so the repair doesn't depend on sealant alone. Full-size pieces also leave room for the roofing to cover the fasteners.

Framed chases around factory-built fireplaces meet the roof with siding where a masonry chimney would have brick. There the step flashing tucks up behind the siding and the water-resistive barrier, and laps over the roofing below.

Siding that runs down tight to the shingles, or a barrier that stops short, lets water get behind the flashing and into the chase framing.
