Checking the smoke chamber

Above the damper, the walls lean in to meet the flue. The code calls for that smoke chamber to be built of solid masonry and parged smooth, because rough, stepped or cracked walls slow the smoke and collect deposit.

A light and a mirror through the open damper let our specialists see the chamber walls. They're checking for bare brick where the parging has fallen away, cracks, and heavy deposit on the ledges. A chamber in poor shape can cause smoking and odor even in a freshly swept chimney, and it can be repaired with a new refractory coating applied over the old walls.

Where the pipe enters the chimney

A stove connector joins the chimney through a thimble, a fireclay, refractory or metal sleeve set in the masonry. The Florida Building Code wants it built so the connector can't pull out of the wall or poke into the flue past the liner.

We check that the thimble is solid, that the connector fits it snugly, and that the pipe stops at the inner face of the liner. A pipe pushed too far into the flue narrows it and catches deposit. A loose thimble lets smoke leak into the room. Both are worth fixing, and you'll get prices for each.

Does the flue match the fireplace opening?

Smoke from a big opening needs a flue with room to carry it. The Florida Building Code sets the ratio: for a round flue, no less than one twelfth of the opening's area, and for a square one, no less than one tenth. A flue smaller than that struggles on every fire.

When a fire smokes into the room for no clear reason, our specialists measure the opening and the flue and do that arithmetic. An undersized flue can't keep up, and the fix might be a smaller opening, a taller chimney or a change of appliance. You'll get the measurements and the options, rather than a guess.
