Where the pipe enters the chimney

A stove connector joins the chimney through a thimble, a fireclay, refractory or metal sleeve set in the masonry. The Florida Building Code wants it built so the connector can't pull out of the wall or poke into the flue past the liner.

We check that the thimble is solid, that the connector fits it snugly, and that the pipe stops at the inner face of the liner. A pipe pushed too far into the flue narrows it and catches deposit. A loose thimble lets smoke leak into the room. Both are worth fixing, and you'll get prices for each.
