The flue an open fireplace needs

With no collar on an open fireplace, the building code works the flue size out from the fireplace opening instead. Under the Florida Building Code, a round flue has to be at least one twelfth of the opening's area and a square one at least one tenth.

Width times height gives the opening's area, and the liner chosen must satisfy that ratio. A large opening can need a bigger liner than the chimney can hold.

In that case, reducing the opening with a surround or glass doors listed for it can bring the numbers into line, and you'll hear those choices with their prices.

Proving the flue before ordering

Proving the flue before installation is something Selkirk's instructions describe: running a test piece or guide cone of the liner's size down the full length to be sure it will pass.
