Where aluminum liners are allowed

Aluminum flexible liners are lighter and cheaper, and they turn up in chimneys serving gas water heaters and furnaces. Their makers limit them: Selkirk's aluminum liner, for instance, is for Category I gas appliances only, and not for solid or liquid fuels or other gas categories.

We check any aluminum liner already in your chimney against the appliance it serves. If the appliance has been changed, or a wood fireplace shares the chimney, the aluminum liner may no longer be suitable.

When they install new, they choose stainless unless the appliance and the maker's rules clearly allow aluminum. The appliance label settles it.

Flexible liners and offsets

Plenty of chimneys don't rise straight. An offset, where the flue shifts sideways partway up, blocks a rigid liner. Corrugated flexible stainless liners are made to bend through those offsets and take up expansion as they heat, while keeping their round shape.

Offsets show up while measuring, and the liner chosen has to pass them. Our pros feed the liner down slowly with a pulling cone, guiding it around the bend without kinking it.

A kinked or crushed liner loses area and won't draft properly, so they check its shape at the offset before connecting anything below. The liner is marked where it passes the bend.

Wrapping the liner in insulation

Selkirk's liner instructions require insulation where the chimney's clearance to combustibles can't be determined, and describe a foil-faced ceramic blanket wrapped with overlapping seams, sealed with foil tape and held with a mesh sleeve.
