The flue an open fireplace needs

With no collar on an open fireplace, the building code works the flue size out from the fireplace opening instead. Under the Florida Building Code, a round flue has to be at least one twelfth of the opening's area and a square one at least one tenth.

Width times height gives the opening's area, and the liner chosen must satisfy that ratio. A large opening can need a bigger liner than the chimney can hold.

In that case, reducing the opening with a surround or glass doors listed for it can bring the numbers into line, and you'll hear those choices with their prices.

316L and AL29-4C stainless

Makers match the liner alloy to the exhaust. National Chimney's instructions, for example, list 316L stainless for wood, pellet, coal, oil and non-condensing gas appliances, and AL29-4C for high-efficiency gas units, whose cooler exhaust condenses and attacks metal harder.

Using 316L on a high-efficiency appliance shortens the liner's life. Using AL29-4C on a wood appliance isn't what it's listed for. Our pros read the appliance type before choosing and name the alloy on the quote.

If you might change appliances later, they'll mention which choice keeps your options open. The alloy also decides which cap and top plate go with the liner, and those are matched.

Gas appliance makers generally don't allow their vents to connect into a chimney flue serving a wood-burning appliance, and each appliance is meant to have its own flue. Sharing a flue between a fireplace and a furnace can send exhaust where it doesn't belong.
