Pre-hydrating repointing mortar

Mortar for repointing gets a different mix routine from mortar for laying brick. The Brick Industry Association describes a pre-hydration step: the dry ingredients are mixed, dampened just enough to hold their shape in a ball, left to stand, and then brought to a working consistency that's still drier than mortar for laying brick.

The step reduces shrinkage as the mortar cures, so the new joint stays tight against the brick instead of pulling away. Our specialists pack the mortar into the joint in layers, letting each firm up before the next, and tool the final layer when it's thumbprint hard. Getting the mortar color right

Mortar color comes from the sand, the cement and any pigment in the mix, and old mortar has also weathered for years. A mix straight from the bag may not match.
