Pre-hydrating repointing mortar

Mortar for repointing gets a different mix routine from mortar for laying brick. The Brick Industry Association describes a pre-hydration step: the dry ingredients are mixed, dampened just enough to hold their shape in a ball, left to stand, and then brought to a working consistency that's still drier than mortar for laying brick.

The step reduces shrinkage as the mortar cures, so the new joint stays tight against the brick instead of pulling away.
