Setting the flue liner as the chimney rises

In a rebuilt masonry chimney, clay flue tiles go in as the walls go up. The Florida Building Code has them set in medium-duty refractory mortar that won't dissolve in water, with tight joints struck smooth inside, and with a space around them so the tiles can expand without pushing on the brick.

It's formed to overhang the new brick so water drips clear of the chimney face, and it's reinforced and cured properly. A flat mortar top like the one that may have helped the old chimney fail isn't an option. The crown is part of the rebuild price. A cap sized to the flue goes on right after.

Air space and fireblocking in a rebuild

Where the chimney passes floors and ceilings, the gap is fireblocked with noncombustible material. On a full rebuild, our pros build those clearances in and fireblock at each level.
