Repointing should suit the masonry already present. The existing brick and mortar, exposure and repair purpose all influence the replacement mix. A stronger product is not automatically a better choice, and appearance matching needs discussion before a large area is repaired.

A mix that's too strong looks fine for a while, then the brick faces next to it start to crack and flake. Our pros look at the brick and the old mortar before choosing a mix, rake the joints to a sound depth, and tool the new mortar to shed water.
