Routing a factory-built chimney

A factory-built chimney may permit offsets, but their angles, number and support must follow the actual system's instructions. Planning the route includes those limits before framing is opened. Fitting around an obstacle is not enough to establish that a proposed route is allowed.

Nothing is cut until the route is planned, with the ceiling joists and rafters it will pass checked and the maker's clearance to framing kept all the way up.

Where the route crosses a floor or ceiling, the maker's fire stops go in. The route is sketched on your quote so you know where the chimney will run.

Passing through attic insulation

Where the chimney passes near insulation, the system's required air space and shielding must be preserved. Shield type, support and height are checked against the applicable instructions and requirements. Loose insulation must not be packed into a space intended to remain clear.

The shield keeps a clear space around the pipe and stops insulation from falling against it. Our specialists fit the maker's shield, measure the insulation depth first and set the shield to clear it.

If insulation is added later, the shield still has to clear the new depth, and they'll mention that to you when the job is done.

A chimney chase on an outside wall

When a factory-built fireplace sits on an outside wall, its chimney can run up the outside of the house inside a framed chase. The chase is framed like a small wall, sided in the same material as the rest of the house, and capped with a metal chase cover.

Inside the chase, the chimney keeps its listed clearances and fire stops. Framing and siding the chase are carpentry and siding work, and the quote says who does them.

The fireplace, the chimney and the maker's parts through the chase are ours to install, along with a chase cover and cap that shed water.
