Firebrick and the mortar that holds it

Ordinary brick and mortar aren't made for the inside of a firebox. The lining calls for firebrick, and the Florida Building Code names the standards it has to meet, ASTM C27 or C1261, plus a refractory mortar of medium-duty grade under ASTM C199.

The code also caps the joints at a quarter of an inch, because the mortar is the weak point in a lining and thin joints give the heat less to work on.

Patches made with bagged masonry mortar crumble within a season or two for exactly that reason. Our pros repair fireboxes with the refractory materials the code names, and keep every joint tight.

Why a fireplace smokes into the room

A smoking fireplace has a short list of likely causes. The damper might be stuck partway open. The smoke chamber may be rough or damaged. The opening may be too large for the flue above it. Debris might be choking part of the flue. Or the house may be pulling air in through the fireplace.

Stop using a fireplace that spills smoke until it has been assessed. Inspection comes before any decision about a supervised operational test, which is appropriate only where the condition and appliance instructions permit it. Do not light trial fires yourself to reproduce the problem.

Each cause has its own fix, and you'll hear which one applies and what it costs, instead of a guess that might not help.

The lintel over the opening

The lintel carries masonry over the opening, so its material, bearing and condition matter. A cracked or displaced support needs assessment before the surrounding brickwork is repaired. The required support is established for the actual opening and load.

Heat and moisture rust the steel, and rusting steel swells, lifting the brick above and cracking the joints at each end. A lintel that has sagged lets the brick above it drop in the middle.

The lintel's condition and its bearing decide the fix, and our pros replace it when it's past cleaning and coating, propping the brick above while the new steel goes in.
