Ordinary brick and mortar aren't made for the inside of a firebox. The lining calls for firebrick, and the Florida Building Code names the standards it has to meet, ASTM C27 or C1261, plus a refractory mortar of medium-duty grade under ASTM C199.

The code also caps the joints at a quarter of an inch, because the mortar is the weak point in a lining and thin joints give the heat less to work on.
