Just above the firebox, a hinged iron or steel plate closes the fireplace off from the flue between fires. Soot, rust and heat warping are what jam it, open or shut, and a snapped handle or chain leaves you no way to move it.

With the frame and plate cleaned and the pivot freed, the damper gets worked through its full swing until it opens wide and lies flat when closed. Broken handles and linkages are replaced with parts that fit.
