Firebrick and the mortar that holds it

Ordinary brick and mortar aren't made for the inside of a firebox. The lining calls for firebrick, and the Florida Building Code names the standards it has to meet, ASTM C27 or C1261, plus a refractory mortar of medium-duty grade under ASTM C199.

The code also caps the joints at a quarter of an inch, because the mortar is the weak point in a lining and thin joints give the heat less to work on.

In many masonry fireplaces, a small hinged iron door in the firebox floor lets ashes fall into a chamber underneath. That chamber is emptied later through a second door at the base of the chimney, outside or in a crawl space.

When the floor door rusts open or jams, air feeds the fire from below, and animals can climb up from the chamber into the firebox.
