Soffits, porches and decks

The termination table in each manual also covers what's above and around the vent: ventilated and unventilated soffits, porches, verandas and decks, inside corners and gas meters. Some of those are allowed with more distance; some aren't allowed at all.

Terminating through the roof

When the vent goes up through the roof, the manual sets how high the termination has to stand above the roof and away from nearby walls. The vent maker supplies the roof flashing and storm collar that seal around the pipe.

Those parts go on to the vent maker's instructions. Where the roof covering around the pipe needs to be cut back and reset, or a tile or metal roof needs special handling, a roofer does that part, and the quote names them.

The attic run between the unit and the roof keeps its listed clearances and fire stops.

Fitting the barrier screen

The glass on these units gets hot enough to burn. The 2015 revisions to ANSI Z21.88 and Z21.50 brought in barrier screens for units whose glass exceeds a set temperature, and newer units ship with one that's meant to stay installed.

During installation, the barrier is fitted and checked to sit properly in front of the glass. It's easy to leave off when the finish is going on, and it shouldn't be.

In homes with children or pets, it's one of the most important parts of the whole installation, and it's pointed out at handover. If the screen is ever removed for cleaning, it goes back ahead of your next fire.
