How a direct-vent unit breathes

Direct-vent gas fireplaces sit sealed off from the room. Every bit of its combustion air comes in from outside, and its exhaust goes back out, through a pipe-within-a-pipe that ends at one termination on the wall or roof.

Because it doesn't use room air, the fuel gas code treats it differently from units that do, and it's the type that can go in more rooms. Its glass front helps close it off.
