The pilot flame has a job: it has to wrap the thermocouple and thermopile and reach across to the main burner. Makers show the right flame in a diagram in the manual, and a weak, lazy or misdirected pilot causes a lot of lighting trouble.

Each gas fireplace manual describes, and in most cases pictures, how the flame should look once the unit has warmed up. Many log sets are designed with yellow, lively flames, and some burners show more blue, so the manual is the reference for your unit.
