Haze and soot on the glass

A white film on the inside of the glass builds up over time from normal combustion, and makers sell cleaners made for it. Ordinary glass cleaners can leave residue that bakes on when the unit heats.

Black soot is different. It means the flame is burning dirty, from misplaced logs, a clogged burner or the wrong pressure, and cleaning it off without fixing the cause just brings it back.

Once the unit is cool, the glass is cleaned with the right product, and then the search for the cause of any soot begins. Glass that has etched and won't clear is replaced with the maker's glass.

Spill switches on chimney-vented units

Units that vent through a chimney, rather than a sealed direct vent, use a draft hood, and many have a spill switch mounted near it. If exhaust spills out of the draft hood instead of rising up the vent, the switch heats up and shuts the gas valve.

Some spill switches reset on their own when they cool; others need a manual reset. A unit that keeps shutting off is telling you the vent isn't drawing properly.

The cause might be a blocked vent or a house pulling air down it, and that's what gets fixed. Bypassing the switch isn't an option.

Direct-vent pipe is two pipes in one: an inner pipe carrying exhaust out and an outer one bringing fresh air in. If the inner pipe leaks, exhaust mixes into the fresh air and the pilot and burner can go out.
