Firestops inside the chase

Chimneys of the factory-built kind are designed with firestops where it passes each floor or ceiling level. Majestic's instructions, for example, place a ceiling firestop at every floor level the chase passes.

Firestops keep a fire in the chase from racing up through the framing, and they're part of how the system was listed. Remodeling, water damage or earlier repairs can leave them missing or damaged.

Wherever the chase can be opened or seen into, our pros look for them and note anything missing, with a price for the listed parts to put it right. Parts come from the chimney maker.

Decorative shrouds and the listing

Some chases carry a decorative shroud around the chimney cap, sometimes to make a factory-built chimney look like masonry. The Florida Building Code allows a shroud on a factory-built chimney only when it's listed and labeled for use with that specific chimney system.

An unlisted shroud can trap heat around the cap and change how the chimney drafts.

Any shroud on your chimney gets checked against the chimney's listing during a cover swap. If it isn't listed, our pros explain the options, from a listed shroud to going without, and price them. Nothing unlisted goes back on the pipe. The listing decides.

Setting the new chase cover in place

On replacement day, our pros protect the roof, remove the listed cap and the storm collar, and pull the old cover and its fasteners. They check the top of the framing and repair anything soft before the new cover goes on.

The made-to-measure cover is set with its collar over the pipe, the turndown lapped over the siding, and fastened through the sides. Seams are sealed.

Next the storm collar is refitted and sealed per the chimney maker's instructions, and the cap returns to the pipe. The old cover leaves with them, and the roof below is cleaned. Old fasteners go too.

Why shouldn't the pipe be caulked to the collar?

Chimney makers such as Majestic warn against it, since the pipe needs to move as it heats. The storm collar sheds water from that gap and is sealed the way the maker describes.

Can you clean the rust stains off my siding?
