Working the damper through its swing

On a compatible wood-burning fireplace, the damper must open fully before lighting and stay open until all fire and embers are out and the appliance instructions permit closure. Our pros assess the plate, frame and operating control, including any restriction or corrosion.

A restricted damper can contribute to smoke entering the room; a stuck-open damper can allow unwanted airflow when the fireplace is idle. Our pros assess whether cleaning, a repaired control or a replacement is suitable. A top-sealing option is considered only where the appliance's venting requirements allow it.

Water signs inside the fireplace
