What the code says about spark screens

Wherever a spark arrestor goes on a masonry chimney, the Florida Building Code sets how it's made. The screen openings can't let through a ball bigger than half an inch across, and they can't block one smaller than three eighths of an inch.

That window keeps out most embers without making the mesh so fine it clogs in a few fires. The screen also needs heat and corrosion resistance equal to 19-gage galvanized steel or 24-gage stainless.
