Room for the smoke to get out

Flues at different heights under one cap

In chimneys with more than one flue, the tiles can stand at different heights. Under an outside-mount cap, a tall flue close to a short one can push smoke across into the short one, especially when both are in use.

Heights and spacing get measured before a multi-flue cap is recommended, and the cap is sized to clear the tallest flue with room for smoke to escape. Where flues are badly mismatched, separate caps may work better. You'll see the reasoning and both prices before choosing.
