Why a mortar wash isn't a crown

A lot of chimneys were topped with a thin layer of mortar spread across the last course of brick and tapered to nothing at the edge. It looks like a crown, but mortar in a thin layer cracks quickly, and the feathered edge breaks away first.

Concrete, metal or stone across the top of a brick chimney is what the Florida Building Code wants, pitched so water runs off, finished with a drip at the edge, and given a flexible, caulked joint where each flue liner passes through. The flue tile and the crown heat and cool at different rates, and the tile gets much hotter. If the concrete is poured tight against the tile, one cracks the other as they move. That's why the Florida Building Code asks for a caulked separation at each liner, following ASTM C1283.
