Chase covers that pond and rust

On a factory-built fireplace, the top of the framed chase is a sheet-metal cover with a collar where the chimney pipe comes through. A flat cover lets water pond; ponded water rusts the metal, and once it rusts through, water runs straight into the chase.

Low spots, rust and loose seams on the cover all get checked, and so does the framing inside the chase, for water or rot. A new cover made with a slope and a proper collar sheds water off the top. Any rotted framing inside the chase is priced separately, since it has to be fixed before the new cover goes on.
