Cleaning the flue before relining

Liner makers ask for a swept flue and a clean smoke chamber before their product is fitted. Deposit left behind a new liner can keep smoldering, and an unswept flue hides the loose tile and ledges that decide the install.

So the sweep comes first, then the smoke chamber is scraped and anything loose is pulled from the old flue. Then our pros measure and prove the path on a clean flue.

The sweep is part of the relining plan and priced on its own line. If heavy glaze is found, removing it may be a separate step, and you'll hear about it before the liner is ordered.

Condensation in an oversized flue

Gas exhaust carries water vapor. In a flue that's too large or too cold, the exhaust cools before it leaves, and the water condenses on the flue walls.

That moisture carries acids that eat mortar joints, crack tile and stain the chimney from inside, showing up as white crust and damp patches that look like a rain leak. A liner sized to the appliance keeps the exhaust warm enough to leave as vapor.
