Gas appliance liners, sized by table

Gas furnaces and water heaters are sized for venting by tables in the national fuel gas code, NFPA 54, along with each appliance's own instructions. Those tables weigh the appliance's input, the flue's height and the vent type.

For the same reason, the Florida Building Code points gas flue lining to its own fuel gas rules. Our specialists use those tables and the appliance manuals to pick a liner size, and they check that the liner metal suits the appliance.

An undersized liner can spill exhaust; an oversized one condenses it. Either way, the size chosen, and why, is written on the quote.

Where aluminum liners are allowed

Aluminum flexible liners are lighter and cheaper, and they turn up in chimneys serving gas water heaters and furnaces. Their makers limit them: Selkirk's aluminum liner, for instance, is for Category I gas appliances only, and not for solid or liquid fuels or other gas categories.

We check any aluminum liner already in your chimney against the appliance it serves. If the appliance has been changed, or a wood fireplace shares the chimney, the aluminum liner may no longer be suitable.

When they install new, they choose stainless unless the appliance and the maker's rules clearly allow aluminum. The appliance label settles it.

When the water heater is left on its own

A masonry flue once shared by a furnace and a water heater was sized for both. When the furnace is replaced with one that vents elsewhere, the water heater is left alone in a flue far too big for it.

Its small amount of exhaust cools and condenses in that big flue, and it may not draft reliably. Our specialists check for that situation whenever a furnace has been changed, and size a liner for the water heater alone, using the gas code's tables and the heater's instructions.

The fix is a smaller liner, and it's priced up front. The new liner size is on the quote.
