Mortar failure against brick failure

A brick chimney has two materials, and they fail differently. Mortar wears first by design: it softens, recesses and washes out of the joints, while the brick around it stays sound. Brick fails when its face flakes away, when it cracks through, or when it crumbles from years of water.
