Three kinds of deposit a sweep runs into

Flue deposit comes in stages. First is a dry, dusty soot that brushes off easily. Next comes a crunchy, flaky layer, the result of cooler fires, which takes firmer brushing and hand scraping in the smoke chamber. The last stage is a hard, shiny glaze that bonds to the tile and shrugs off an ordinary brush.

You'll hear which stage turned up and where it sat, since the pattern says a lot about how the fireplace is being used. The first two come out on a normal sweep. Glaze needs rotary tools or a chemical treatment and a return visit, and that's quoted separately so you can decide.
