Breathable repellents, explained

A breathable, or vapor-permeable, repellent soaks into the brick and lines the walls of its pores instead of forming a skin on top. Liquid water beads on the surface and runs off, while water vapor from inside the wall can still pass out through the pores.

That balance is what a chimney needs, since some moisture gets in from the top, the flue and the air on any chimney. The crown gets its own product
