Smoothing the smoke chamber

The smoke chamber's surface and shape both matter. A suitable refractory finish cannot compensate for every damaged or incorrectly formed chamber. The assessment considers the existing masonry and transition into the flue before parging or rebuilding is proposed.

Rough, stepped or crumbling walls slow the smoke and turn it back toward the room, and every ledge collects deposit.

Parging may be suitable where the chamber can support that repair and the selected refractory product is approved for the use. Wider damage or an unsuitable shape can require another approach. The proposed work should explain what it addresses without promising that a coating will resolve every smoke problem.

Is the hearth big enough?

A hearth that's too small lets sparks land on the floor. For most openings, the Florida Building Code wants the noncombustible extension to reach 16 inches out and 8 inches to either side; openings of 6 square feet or larger need 20 inches out and 12 to each side.

The hearth extension also needs the construction and thickness required for that fireplace design. A raised firebox can change the applicable detail. Our pros consider the assembly beneath the finish before treating replacement tile as the complete repair.

Your hearth gets measured against those numbers. A short hearth can be lengthened or widened with matching noncombustible material, and each option comes with its price.

The lintel over the opening

The lintel carries masonry over the opening, so its material, bearing and condition matter. A cracked or displaced support needs assessment before the surrounding brickwork is repaired. The required support is established for the actual opening and load.

Heat and moisture rust the steel, and rusting steel swells, lifting the brick above and cracking the joints at each end. A lintel that has sagged lets the brick above it drop in the middle.
