The floor beneath a gas unit

Manuals say what can go under the unit. A unit set on carpet, tile or other combustible flooring may need a metal or wood panel beneath it running its full width and depth, while wood flooring may be allowed directly.

The floor also has to carry the unit's weight and hold it level so the logs and burner sit right.

Going through the chart with you before the wall is finished heads that off, and the finish carpentry is named on the quote with its trade. The chart is kept with your copy of the manual.

Keeping the controls reachable

The valve, receiver and connections of a gas fireplace sit in a compartment behind a lower grille. The fuel gas code says panels, grilles and access doors that come off for normal servicing mustn't be attached to the building.

Built-ins, stone and cabinetry can box that compartment in if nobody plans for it.
