Units that use room air

Some gas fireplaces aren't sealed: they draw combustion air from the room and vent through a draft hood into a B-vent pipe or a lined chimney. The fuel gas code treats them differently, especially in bedrooms and small rooms.

They need enough room air to burn properly, and a house that pulls air in through its vents can upset their draft, which is why many carry a spill switch near the draft hood.

You'll hear the difference before you choose, and our pros may steer you toward a direct-vent model, which doesn't depend on room air. The difference is explained on the quote.

Terminating through the roof

When the vent goes up through the roof, the manual sets how high the termination has to stand above the roof and away from nearby walls. The vent maker supplies the roof flashing and storm collar that seal around the pipe.

Those parts go on to the vent maker's instructions. Where the roof covering around the pipe needs to be cut back and reset, or a tile or metal roof needs special handling, a roofer does that part, and the quote names them.

The attic run between the unit and the roof keeps its listed clearances and fire stops.

Startup checks before handover

No gas fireplace is finished until it's been started up and checked. Maker manuals list the steps: test every gas connection with a leak solution, read both gas pressures and compare them with the rating plate, and set the logs and embers to the layout.

Then the unit is lit, allowed to warm up, and the flame is compared with the manual's picture. The barrier screen is fitted and the glass seal checked.
