Hand work in the smoke chamber

Above the damper, the walls slope inward to meet the flue. That smoke chamber is where smoke slows and cools, so it loads up faster than the straight flue above it, and a brush dropped from the top slides past most of it.

Our specialists reach in through the open damper with scrapers and short brushes and work the walls from the cap down. Stepped brick walls take longer than smooth, parged ones, because each step is a ledge that holds deposit. The loosened material falls to the smoke shelf, and the vacuum takes it from there, so nothing is left in the corners.
