Why the glass has to seal

On a sealed gas fireplace, the glass front closes off the combustion chamber as well as showing the flame. Maker manuals warn that the glass must be properly seated and sealed, or combustion products can leak into the room, and that the unit mustn't run with the glass removed, cracked or broken.

Latches, frame and the gasket that seals the glass to the firebox all get checked. A flattened or torn gasket is replaced with the maker's part, and cracked glass is replaced before the unit runs again.
