How tall the flue tile should stand

Each flue tile should stand above the crown, so water running off the concrete can't spill into the flue and so a cap has something to grip. The Brick Industry Association recommends at least 2 inches of liner above the crown.

On older chimneys, tiles are sometimes cut flush or broken off at the top. Our specialists check the height before rebuilding a crown, and if a tile is broken, they repair or extend it first. A crown poured around a short tile leaves a weak spot right where water collects, and the cap choices shrink too. The fix for a short tile is priced separately.

Crowns and caps work as a pair

The crown keeps water out of the brick; the cap keeps it out of the flue. Either one failing lets water into the chimney, and one can damage the other. A cap fastened into a cracked crown won't hold, and a crown without a cap lets rain run down every flue.
