How far the base flashing should reach

To do its job, base flashing has to reach far enough both ways. The Brick Industry Association's detail has it extend at least 4 inches onto the roof and at least 4 inches up the chimney face, with tabs folded around the corners.

Pieces cut short to save metal, or trimmed back during an old roof job, leave too little overlap. Water creeps sideways under the roofing or over the top edge.
